Drunk man (40) who urinated in garda cell has ‘no recollection of the incident’
Ioana Stanciu pleaded guilty to public drunkenness, threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour and criminal damage.
An out-of-work builder urinated in a garda station cell after he was arrested for drunkenly banging on doors in the hostel where he lived.
Ioana Stanciu (40) who “tended to drink to excess” when unemployed had no recollection of the incident in the station, a court heard. Judge Miriam Walsh fined him €550.
Stanciu, with an address at a hostel on Gardiner Street, Dublin, pleaded guilty to public drunkenness, threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour and criminal damage.
Dublin District Court heard gardaí were called to the hostel where the accused was intoxicated, disruptive and banging on doors on December 11.
He was arrested and taken to Store Street garda station, where he urinated in the cell, causing damage.
He had previous convictions for public order offences and criminal damage.
Stanciu moved here from Romania a year-and-a-half ago and had worked sporadically in the construction industry, his solicitor Andrew Broderick said.
On the night of the incident there was “something going on and he felt frustrated at how he was being treated” but accepted there was no excuse for kicking on doors.
“It’s unfortunate that he, at times, seems to be unable to control his behaviour” as he should when out of work, Mr Broderick added.
