Dublin v Mayo score recap from the All-Ireland Football Championship tie

Old rivals Dublin and Mayo clashed again this afternoon in the All-Ireland SFC as they battled it out for the top spot in Group 2 and a place in the quarter-finals.

After claiming their 14th consecutive Leinster title last month, Dublin had gone on to win their first two group games of the All-Ireland series against Roscommon and Cavan.

Mayo, who lost out in the Connacht final to Galway by a point, also won their first two group games.

These sides have been involved in many titanic tussles and this one was no different at a great atmosphere at Dr. Hyde Park.

Many feared that this encounter would lack bite, given the safety net of a preliminary quarter-final, but it was played a high intensity from the start.

The pattern throughout was Dublin edging ahead by one or two points before Mayo pegged them back.

But that changed in the final seconds when Ryan O’Donoghue won a free that is clipped over the bar to give Mayo the lead.

That was not the final twist, though, as Dublin won possession with Cluxton’s kickout and worked the ball to Cormac Costello to fist the ball over from close-range to level the match.

It was a draw that due to Dublin’s superior scoring difference saw them top the group and go straight into the All-Irealand quarter-finals.

For Mayo, they will go into Monday’s draw for the preliminary quarter-finals.

What it all means…

Dublin will join Kerry, Armagh and Donegal in going straight into the quarter-finals.

Galway, Mayo, Tyrone and Louth will be at home in the preliminary quarters, with Derry, Roscommon, Cork and Monaghan on the road.
