Dundalk goalkeeper leaves club two weeks after 10-match ban for calling official an ‘Irish c***’

George Shelvey leaves Dundalk two weeks after receiving a ten-match ban.

Dundalk have announced that George Shelvey has left the club, just over a fortnight after the goalkeeper was hit with a 10-match ban for calling a match official an “Irish c**t”.

Earlier this month, the 23-year-old received the hefty suspension for his use of discriminatory language towards a referee, which was in breach of the FAI regulations on racism/discrimination, after the ex-Nottingham Forest player was shown a red card moments after the final whistle in the Lilywhites’ Louth derby defeat at Drogheda on May 6.

Dundalk and the player did not appeal the ruling, with the club saying at the time that: “while George realised very quickly that he had used inappropriate language, he did not, at first, comprehend the discriminatory aspect of his words.

“However, having discussed the matter with club officials he now fully accepts that his words were not only offensive, but also discriminatory.”

Dundalk also committed to working with the ‘keeper to “develop his understanding of these issues”, but now, having only arrived at Oriel Park on a permanent deal last February, the club have confirmed that it has been agreed to mutually end his deal in Louth. Shelvey leaves Dundalk having made nine appearances before receiving the 10-match ban earlier this month.

“Following conversations with George Shelvey, Dundalk FC has agreed to mutually end the player’s contract with the club,” said Dundalk in a statement this evening.

“The 23-year-old goalkeeper arrived from Nottingham Forest in February and went on to make nine appearances for the Lilywhites. We would like to wish George the best of luck in the future.”

Meanwhile, Dundalk have also confirmed that Graham Kelly has joined Jon Daly’s backroom staff at Oriel Park and will assume responsibility for video analysis as well as coaching.

The pair worked together at St Patrick’s Athletic, who the Lilywhites face at Richmond Park on Monday, after Friday’s home clash with Derry City.

“It’s great to have the opportunity to work with Jon again. We had a very close relationship and I know how ambitious he is and I know what his plans are to move this club forward,” said Kelly, who has replaced Dominic Corrigan at the club.
