Eamonn Holmes discussed moving to Ireland to marry local girl before Ruth split
Eamonn Holmes spoke about the possibility of moving back to Northern Ireland to “marry a local girl” prior to his split from Ruth Langsford.
The resurfaced chat from his appearance on NVTV’s Conversations With Gerry Kelly back in November 2023 saw Eamonn discuss a difficult time in his life over the last three years after losing his job, his mother, and his home in Belfast. The GB News host also admitted in the chat that he may always be in a wheelchair now all before his marriage to Ruth broke down.
Eamonn, 54, shared how he will always see Belfast as his home and may move back to Northern Ireland one day as he discussed Ruth and her reluctance to relocate.

He said: “Ruth wouldn’t come back to Northern Ireland. Yes, because of her family and also because she’s English and she sees life around London and things, whereas I can’t stand London. So we have a different outlook on things like that.”
He then mulled over his future and having a different wife – all prior to their split – as he joked that if Ruth got run over he could remarry. He continued: “Maybe Ruth will be run over by a bus or something, who knows?
“If I get another wife I might come back, get a local girl. That’s awful talking about Ruth being run over by a bus, that’s awful.” Eamonn then opened up about his health troubles after undergoing a double-hip replacement operation in 2016, followed by a spinal operation in 2023 which went “wrong” leaving him in a wheelchair.
Eamonn said: “You couldn’t make it up. It’s as if somebody is up there playing with my life. In the past year, I’ve had an operation on my back, which has gone wrong, which has confined me to wheelchair. I have had my mother dying, and I couldn’t go to her funeral.”
He continued: “I’ve had the court case going against me twice for the tax thing. Honestly, Gerry, you could not make it up. There was a fall which broke my shoulder as well.” When asked by Gerry if he would always be “confined to his wheelchair” Eamonn shared his stark reality.
He said: “I would like to think that at some stage in my life I will get out of the wheelchair, but it is strange that you know a year’s passed, and you think, I’ve tried every treatment, believe me, and you go, ‘maybe I’ll never get out of this wheelchair.’ That’s a harsh reality to face.”
Eamonn and Ruth, who have enjoyed successful careers separately as well as together, announced they were parting ways in a joint statement. The short message read: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”
