‘Eddie doesn’t have a clue about hurling’ – Former Ireland rugby coach O’Sullivan and Galway County Board criticised after exit

O’Sullivan was sitting as part of the interview committee that selected Henry Shefflin for the Galway senior job three years ago, a role which Lynskey, a three-time All-Ireland-winning Galway minor boss, also applied for.

Speaking to The Maroon and White podcast, Lynskey didn’t hold back in his assessment that Galway officials do not have the right people making decisions on hurling in the county.

“If we are playing politics with this position and it is about clicks on social media, we are in trouble. It can’t be about that,” Lynskey said.

“If we really care about it, we will put the right people in charge, that are going to steady the ship and develop those young fellas.

“I did the last interview and you’d Eddie O’Sullivan inside in it. You’d county officers inside in it. That was my third interview with them. They will decide who they want at the end of the day.

“I would shake it up in terms of bringing a better calibre of person into the interview process, make sure it guides them as well.

“It is nothing against Eddie – but Eddie doesn’t have a clue about hurling. Not a clue. He doesn’t understand the workings of Galway hurling.

“I would go after somebody who understands us as a county, club hurling, what it means to wear a Galway jersey.”

Galway officials have also drawn the ire of Lynskey, also a former U-20 Tribe boss, for losing some of the best managers and coaches in the county to their rivals.

Pointing to their recent defeat to Dublin, managed by former Galway boss Micheál Donoghue with former Tribe coaches Francis Forde and Noel Larkin assisting him, Lynskey pulled few punches.

“The irony is that they (Dublin) have had the edge on us because you’ve had two Galway managements in charge over the last six years, let’s call a spade a spade,” Lynskey said.

“And these are lads that should be working inside in their own county, not outside. That’s the disappointing thing for me because all them lads are top top coaches that were with Mattie (Kenny), that are with Micheál.

“And they’re outside the county working for someone else, and I’ve an issue with that to be honest, and that’s no fault of the boys either.”
