Eight years since one of Galway city’s greatest moments as day ‘unforgettable’
The Galway public as well as music lovers have looked back on a celebrated day in the city’s recent history when thousands of people came together for a musical performance.
Eight years ago marked a huge event in Galway, which definitely brought more than the usual amount of revelry and tunes to the city’s Shop Street.
A huge public performance of the iconic Steve Earle song Galway Girl took place on the jammed street eight years ago this summer, with hundreds in attendance including Sharon Shannon and Mundy, the duo who brought the song to number one on the Irish charts in 2008.

Drone footage of the sing along from overhead shows the street swamped with people moving and grooving to the classic tune.
The event marked the largest street performance of the song that was the eighth highest selling single in Irish chart history. A post commemorating the big day by the video crew Kamil Films stated:
“What a day it has been! Can’t thank enough my talented film crew, and all the people that showed up to share a bit of joy and passion with us that day. And what a journey this video had to date! With 20 MILLION VIEWS, its global reach & other accomplishments We will share some fun facts & updates soon.”
“Kind thanks to Sharon Shannon, Mundy & all the other passionate artists and performers. Who would like to be part of this type of fun & energy again?”
A repeat of the big day could be ideal, especially seeing as Galway have been performing so well in the All Ireland Senior Football Championship. Perhaps a reunion in Eyre Square could be on the cards with the Tribesmen in attendance.
One commenter on the event’s YouTube video joked that the song was “an old Irish classic, written by an American from Texas,” while another wrote: “This brings a tear to my eye, I’m so thankful to God for all the wonderful people of Ireland I’ve met since moving here”.
