Elderly woman (70s) dies after being hit by a truck in Mayo

An elderly woman has died after being hit by a lorry in a supermarket car park in County Mayo.

Shortly before 12 noon on Thursday, Gardaí and Emergency Services responded to an incident in a supermarket car park in Westport where a female pedestrian was struck by a lorry.

The pedestrian, a woman in her 70s, was pronounced deceased a short time later.

The scene has been examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

The local Coroner has been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

The car park and supermarket have been closed since the incident occurred.

Local Westport Councillor Christy Hyland said the woman was from a very well known family and he expressed his condolences.

“It is very sad.

“The woman is from a well known and highly respected family right throughout Mayo.

“The family is involved in many organisations and aspect of life.

“Our hearts go out to them all.

“The community will rally around the family and support them at this time,” said Cllr Hyland.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

A spokesperson for gardaí said, “Those with camera footage, including motorists with dash-cam recordings, who were in the vicinity at the time are urged to provide this footage to investigating Gardaí.
