Elections 2024: Monaghan County Council round-up

It was all done and dusted at the Monaghan count centre at around 8pm on Sunday night, with all 18 seats across three local electoral areas filled.

The border county proved to be a success story for Sinn Féin, where the party increased its seats from six to eight.

Five of it’s outgoing councillors were re-elected, along with newcomers Bronagh McAree, Paul Gibbons and Sinéad Flynn

Fine Gael will also be pleased with it’s performance, gaining a seat in the seven-seat Monaghan LEA with first-time candidate Pauric Clerkin. They now hold six seats across the county.

While Fianna Fáil lost one of it’s 4 seats held by outgoing councillor Aoife McCooey.

It had three councillors elected this time around, with Seamus Coyle and PJ O’Hanlon topping the poll in Ballybay-Clones and Carrickmacross-Castleblayney respectively.

Raymond Aughey also retained his seat in Monaghan.

Independent Seamus Treanor retained his seat in Monaghan, while veteran Independent councillor Paudge Connolly lost out there.
