Elections 2024: South Dublin County Council round-up
All 40 seats across the seven Local Electoral Areas in South Dublin have now been filled. As has been the case across the county, independent candidates came out on top, taking ten seats and more than a quarter of the vote.

Former MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter and Independent Councillor Patrick Holohan enjoyed huge success, topping the vote in Tallaght South and claiming a second seat in Tallaght Central. This creates an interesting situation for South Dublin Council, as Mr Holohan will now have the option to co-opt someone to occupy the seat he chooses not to take. However, they will have to be ratified by their fellow councillors.
It was a great weekend for Baby Pereppadan, winning re-election for Fine Gael in Tallaght South, and for his son Britto, who was elected for the first time in Tallaght Central, also for Fine Gael. In stark contrast, it was a tough weekend for Sinn Fein’s Cathal King, who lost the seat he had held since 2003.
The Green Party also struggled across all seven LEAs, losing all four of its seats and leaving the party with no representative in South Dublin County Council. Popular TD Paul Gogarty was comfortably returned in Lucan along with four female candidates, Fine Gael’s Vicki Casserly, independent Liona O’Toole, Fine Gael’s Caroline Brady and Labour’s Joanna Tuffy. This makes Lucan one of the few LEAs in the country with an almost all-female representation.
Elsewhere, Glen Moore became the Irish Freedom Party’s first ever candidate to win election taking a seat in Palmerstown-Fonthill, having only joined the party last year.
Overall, for the three main parties, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin, there was little change.
