A flood of comments praised his professionalism and humour in front of camera after a post on X confirmed he was leaving his role.

ITV racing commentator Richard Hoiles said: “His company always makes you smile.”

While BBC Radio race-caller John Hunt posted: “Oh Bob!! A complete one off, brilliant wit and wonderful communicator and raconteur.

“A fantastic innings and carrying his bat, undefeated. Wonderful man.”

While fellow racing presenter Tony Ennis said: “Love his unique style. So much knowledge along side a great sense of humour.

“Lucky to have spent time in his company on racecourses, you will be missed Sir Bob.”

Cooper started his career in the City and worked in a bookshop before finding his way in racing where he became a firm favourite with punters for his Sky role.

His most famous moment came in the now viral clip of presenter Derek Thompson mistaking a man for a woman.

In the video, which found fame again from the ‘Accidental Partridge’ X account, Thompson, hosting from a Sky studio, says: “Oh you’ve been joined by a beautiful lady!”

To which Cooper replied with perfect timing: “It’s a man actually, Derek.”

Punters were gutted such a friendly, familiar face would be leaving – and no longer providing his Placepot picks.

One said: “Go well, Sir Bob. Proper gent and a sad loss.”

Another commented: “Absolute legend the man is. Best wishes for the future.”

One post read: “One of the best. Time to take it easier and at your pace. Thanks for entertaining so candidly.”

While another said: “He is brilliant, great to hear him on the channel. Will be a huge loss.”
