England vs Spain LIVE score updates, team news and TV channel

England are taking part in their first ever final on foreign soil this evening as Gareth Southgate and Co bid to end 58 years of hurt.

Spain stand in the way of the Three Lions lifting major silverware for the first time since the 1966 World Cup, with England facing who will undoubtedly be their toughest opponents at Euro 2024.

Just four days on from Ollie Watkins’ dramatic late winner in the semi-final against the Netherlands in Dortmund, England will be backed by thousands of fans at Berlin’s iconic Olympiastadion as Southgate’s charges look to go one better than Euro 2020 when they were beaten finalists to Italy at Wembley.

Spain beat France 2-1 on Tuesday to reach their first major final since winning the European Championships for a second consecutive time in 2012.

Is tonight the night that football finally comes home? You can follow all the build-up followed by live updates with football.london below.

Kane on Southgate

Harry Kane has been speaking on Gareth Southgate’s future as England manager.

He told BBC Sport.

“We made it clear we love the manager. But that’s his decision and this is not the time to talk about it, that’s down to him, he’ll go away and think about it. Right now we’re all just hurting.

Full-time

It’s heartbreak again for England in the Euros final.

Oyarzabal’s goal in the 86th minute proved to be the difference in a game of not too many chances.

The wait for a major trophy goes on.

How is that not in?

Three huge chances for England from a corner.

Rice sees a towering header saved by Simon, Guehi’s follow up is cleared off the line, before Rice puts another header wide.

There is four additional minutes for England to find another equaliser.

Spain re-take the lead

With four minutes left to play, Spain re-take the lead.

Oyarzabal turns the ball beyond Pickford. Although there is a small suspicion that he could be offside, but a check awards the goal.

WATCH!

Here’s a video from a pub in central London of the England fans celebrating that Cole Palmer goal. What a moment for the entire country.

Pickford save

England have Pickford to thank again. Spain look to have got in to re-take the lead through Yamel, only to find the goalkeeper in the way with a save to his right.

There are seven minutes of normal time left. It’s starting to get tense…

England goal!!

Cole Palmer equalises for England!!

It all came from Saka, who made a brilliant run down the right. He put the ball into the box for Bellingham to poke back to Palmer.

He puts an arrow into the bottom corner. Game on.

Spain chance

Pickford was forced into a good save by Spain wonderkid Yamal. He cut inside and got a shot off, with the England keeper getting down to his right well to keep his team in the game.

Cole Palmer is coming on for England as they continue to defend.

Fans are pleased with that substitute

Watkins has indeed replaced Kane in the team, that has been lauded by England fans in the stands with Watkins’ name being sung.

England have been better the last few minutes, with a dangerous free kick cleared by Spain.

Bellingham has just put a shot just wide of the post as the Three Lions search for an equaliser.

Almost 2-0 Spain

England are hanging on here.

Morata got in in the England box, and put the ball past Pickford but Stones was able to clear before it got near the line.

Spain then recycled the ball with Williams striking from outside of the area which was just inches wide of the left hand post.

Ollie Watkins is getting ready to come on. Will Harry Kane be sacrificed?

England response

There was another big scare for England after the Spain opener, with Dani Olmo putting his effort just wide.

England then had a decent spell of possession as they looked to put pressure on the Spain backline. But that eventually came to nothing, with Spain looking dangerous when they go forward, and John Stones being shown a yellow card.

Spain goal

And it’s Nico Williams, with Lamine Yemal providing the assist.

Yemal runs at the England defence and plays the perfect ball for an unmarked Williams on the left, he makes no mistake to put the ball past Pickford.

Second half starts

The players are out for the second half in Berlin.

Spain have made a change and it’s a significant one with Zubimendi replacing the influential Rodri. That prompted a response of “Now I’m scared,” from BBC pundit Juan Mata.

Half time

The whistle goes with the score at England 0-0 Spain.

Foden forced Simon into a save from the free-kick just before the whistle. It’s been cagey to say the least!

Pub watch

We’ve got another shot from one of our friends in the pub in central London. Looks busy inside as well as outside at Between the Bridges.

Really good defending from England again

Marc Guehi and John Stones team up to stop Alvaro Morata after he appeared to get in down the left.

While Spain have had the majority of possession, England have done well to keep them relatively quiet.

They are looking dangerous when breaking too, with Kyle Walker earning a free kick in a good position just before half time.

Shearer sums up the game

Shearer has summed up the game so far, with neither team having any real clear cut chances yet.

When asked on BBC commentary if he has Spain ahead on a ‘boxing’ scoring card, Shearer said: “Just, but neither goalkeeper has been troubled.”

Two quick yellow cards

It may be 0-0 in the scoreline, but it’s 1-1 in terms of yellow cards.

Harry Kane was first cautioned for a late challenge on Fabian. Dani Olmo has now been given the same punishment for a high boot that caught Declan Rice in the midrift.

England looking more dangerous

After a spell of Spain pressure, it’s now England’s turn to put some pressure on the Spanish goal.

Bukayo Saka is looking dangerous down the right hand side with Kyle Walker getting beyond him and providing another option that led to corner.

Another similar attack led to Declan Rice having a shot from the edge of the area blocked and Spain eventually clearing the ball and regaining possession.

Stones saves England

Brilliant defending from John Stones as Nico Williams bared down on Jordan Pickford’s goal. The Man City centre-back stayed concentrated throughout in a one-on-one with the winger and got a block in to send the ball from a corner.

Le Normand tried to do a Jude Bellingham from the resulting corner, but nobody can do it like him, the ball going for a goalkick.

National anthem

Here’s a portion of the national anthem from Between the Bridges in central London before kick-off.

Kick-off

We are underway in Berlin.

England are looking to make history as the forward players look to press the Spanish defenders early in the game.

As with most games of this magnitude, it’s been a pretty quiet opening few minutes, but John Stones put it out for a corner that England were able to clear easily.

Here come the teams

It’s time…. the teams are emerging from the tunnel.

First it will be the national anthems, then the pre-match handshakes before the action kicks off.

Anyone else feeling nervous?

Bank Holiday time?

Sir Keir Starmer has teased that the occasion will be marked “in some way” if England get the job done tonight.

Could we be in line for another Bank Holiday? Come on Sir Keir, you know it makes sense.

Southgate explains Luke Shaw decision

Gareth Southgate has explained why he has taken the decision to replace Kieran Trippier with Luke Shaw.

Speaking to the BBC he said:

“He’s an experienced player and we feel his return to play we’ve managed pretty well.

“He’s ready to play. Obviously he gives us balance. Kieran’s done a brilliant job for the team and the way he’s handled everything in the last few weeks has been top class.”

“Football’s Coming Home”

What other song could be being played in the stadium at Berlin?

Hearing it being belted out by the travelling England fans has me up for the game, I can only imagine what it’s like being in the stands at the stadium.

Schmeichel’s cheeky prediction

The group stages of the tournament saw England come up against Kasper Schmeichel’s Denmark with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

The goalkeeper, who is said to be closing in on a transfer to Celtic, and has played in England for most of his career, has now given his cheeky prediction for the final between England and Spain, and it’s good news for the Three Lions.

Kier Starmer answers bank holiday question

Prime minister Sir Kier Starmer has hinted that there could be a bank holiday if England lift the trophy and make history tonight.

Speaking to ITV Sport he said:

“I don’t know. Let’s get through the next few hours, get the hands on the trophy. We’ll need to mark it in some way, we’d have to see what that is. An appropriate way.”

The hopes of an extra day off work remain!

Spain are ‘afraid’ of England

Speaking on BBC before the match, former spain and Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has admitted that his nation are ‘afraid’ of what England can do.

He said:

“We are afraid, yesterday I was confident but today I am afraid. You have a great team especially up front, you have players who can win a game in one split second, Kane, Phil (Foden), Saka, Bellingham. We know we are playing good, we know we arrive in this final as probably favourites, but we know what you are capable of.”

Our survey says

A new Betfair survey of more than 2,000 Brits has revealed the lengths football fans will go to see England win the Euros final.

Three Lions supporters are so desperate for Southgate’s side to bring it home that 16% of them would be willing to allow their club rivals to win a league title next season, with a fifth (20%) of Arsenal fans saying they would wear a Tottenham shirt out in public to ensure the trophy is won.

One in ten (10%) Man City fans would be happy to never see their team win the league again, while the same amount of Spurs fans would take relegation next season.

‘England can deal with Lamine Yamal’

Former England man Danny Mills is confident that England can cope with the talent that Spain have in their squad and has sent a warning to the opposition over the quality that England possess.

He told Sky Sports:

“He’s an exceptional talent, we know that, but if I was England, I’d be looking and thinking, ‘we can deal with that, that’s not a problem’. Nico Williams down the other side, (Alvaro) Morata, probably, down the middle, ‘yes, we can deal with that’.“I don’t see that as a huge problem. This isn’t Cristiano Ronaldo in his pomp, this isn’t Lionel Messi in his pomp, Gareth Bale in his pomp.“This is a young kid with bags of talent; we’ve got (Phil) Foden, (Jude) Bellingham, Cole Palmer, (Bukayo) Saka. We’ve got equally as much threat.“Spain will have to worry about what we are doing as well just as much as us worrying about them.”

Excitement builds

We will be bringing you photos and videos from around the city ahead of kick-off at tonight’s game and during the gamer too.

Excitement is already building as you can see from this photo from Facundo Arrizabalaga, out and about in central London today.

Party time

Where is the best place to party tonight if England do the business?

Well, according to a study by OLBG, Manchester is the place to be based on a range of factors including average age of the local population, concentration of bars, clubs and pubs, quality of public outdoor spaces and weather forecasts.

London, the capital of England and the UK as a whole, only managed to finish 11th behind a top 10 of other cities that can offer revellers a thrilling array of options for supporting England all across the country this weekend.

Early team news

Some early team news breaking from the England camp.

It is reported by the Telegraph that Luke Shaw is set to replace Kieran Trippier at left wing-back, in what will be his first start of the tournament.

It was reported earlier this week that England were set to remain unchanged, but it seems like Southgate has made the decision to try and offer more ‘balance and flexibility’ on the left.

Gareth Southgate’s clear message

England manager Gareth Southgate has told his team to go and ‘make it happen’ in tonight’s final amid talk of it being England’s year.

The Three Lions have seen two late goals and a penalty shootout victory on their way to the final in Berlin. But it’s not something that Southgate is buying in to.

“Look, I’m not a believer in fairytales but I am a believer in dreams, and we’ve had big dreams. We’ve felt the need and the importance of that, but then you have to make those things happen,” he told media at the Olympiastadion ahead of the final.

“And fate, the run that we’ve had, the late goals, the penalties: all that doesn’t equate to it being our moment. We have to make it happen tomorrow. We have to perform at the level that we need to. Of course it would be a lovely story but it’s in our hands and our performance is the most important thing.”
