Gaz: Job done but Trent Alexander-Arnold should not be in midfield – he gives the ball away and makes too many mistakes. We can’t do that against the good teams.

Jeremy, Somerset: Sorry to be put a dampener on this victory but Gareth Southgate needs to be ruthless and choose between Jude Bellingham or Phil Foden. Bellingham is so commanding, he squeezes Foden on the left, because of this there was no creative balance in midfield. Consequently, England relied on the right side where Bukayo Saka was out-muscled the deeper we got. Bellingham would have combined much better with a natural left-sided attacker but Jack Grealish isn’t on the bench…he is on the beach! There were positives with the defence and substitutes played like they actually wanted the ball, but the team looked tired and short of ideas. Yes, it’s a first game victory but everyone you hear or read say one thing – only winning the Euros will do and last nights performance was a long way from doing this.

Dan, London: I hope this tournament finally sees fans in this country reigning in expectations. A solid win last night against a decent side. We don’t have eleven world beaters, far from it, Jude Bellingham and maybe Harry Kane and that’s it. Three points is decent at this stage.
