Events to take place for National Day of Commemoration
National Day of Commemoration ceremonies are to be held at several locations across the country.
The events will honour all Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in wars or on service with the United Nations and other international organisations in the service of peace.
A National Day of Commemoration interfaith ceremony at Dublin’s Royal Hospital Kilmainham begins at 11am.
The main ceremony has returned to Dublin after being in held in Co Cork for the first-time last year.
It will be attended by President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Simon Harris and other members of the Government and Council of State.
They will be joined by members of the Diplomatic Corps, Defence Forces, veterans’ organisations, the judiciary and Northern Ireland representatives.
Relatives of those who died in past wars or on UN service alongside relatives of the 1916 leaders have also been invited.
The ceremony will include a wreath-laying by President Higgins on behalf of the people of Ireland and will end with a fly-past by the Air Corps.
Ceremonies will also be held in six other locations around the country.
Locations include Fitzgerald’s Park in Cork city, the University of Galway, Kilkenny Castle, on the grounds of Limerick City and County Council and at the John Condon Memorial in Waterford city
These are to begin at 11am.
A ceremony at City Hall in Sligo Town is due to begin at 1:30pm.
