Family of American who drowned in Grand Canal thanks public for support

The family of one of two men who drowned in the Grand Canal in Dublin just over a week ago has thanked people for their support and kindness ahead of a celebration of his life.

Alex Warnick, who was a native of Oregon in the US, died alongside his friend, Donal Scanlon, a native of Ballybunion, Co Kerry, on July 6.

The men had been known to homeless services in Dublin and were sleeping in tents near where they died.

On Tuesday, a celebration of Alex’s life will be held at Glasnevin Crematorium at 3pm, and will also be shown online.

The death notice said that the 42-year-old is survived by his family Greg and Susan and his brothers Josh and Garrett, extended family on his mother’s side, relatives and friends.

A death notice published on rip.ie said: “The family would like to thank you for your support and kindness at this time.”

No death notice has yet been published for Mr Scanlon, who was in his late 40s.

Gardaí were called to the scene when two men were found dead in the water shortly after 8am on July 6.

The area was sealed off and gardaí and forensics remained along the canal for most of the afternoon.

A garda spokesman said the circumstances of the deaths are still under investigation.

He said: “Gardaí at Donnybrook continue to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the bodies of two males (aged in their 40’s) at Grand Parade, Dublin, on the morning of Saturday, 6th July 2024.”

He said that while post-mortem examinations have been completed, the results will not be released for operational reasons. A file will be prepared for the Coroners Court, ahead of inquests into the deaths of both men.

He added that family liaison officers have been assigned to keep the family of the deceased men informed of developments.

Tributes have been paid to both men online, while they were remembered at a soup run in Dublin city centre in recent days.

Their deaths were raised in the Dáil on two separate occasions, with Taoiseach Simon Harris responding to People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy by expressing his sympathy to the families and friends of both men.
