The Brazilian struck in January 2016, targeting a 24-year-old when she was under the influence of alcohol and an ecstasy tablet on a night out in Dublin’s Harcourt Street.

He told one of her pals he was also her “friend”, took her to Montague Lane, raped her and left her in a pool of blood.

Tiso, now 39, was first held at Midlands Prison but was moved to Castlerea after twice being assaulted by inmates.

He had his 13-year sentence cut to 11 years in 2018 and is now due to be freed due to time served and good behaviour.

At the time of his conviction, an order was made for him to be deported and not return to Ireland for ten years.

But at present, the Irish Prison Service has yet to be informed of any arrangements by the Garda National Immigration Bureau to deport him.

One source said: “This individual committed a horrific crime against a defenceless woman and he’s now coming to the end of his sentence.

“He has told other inmates in the past of his desire to return to Brazil and hopefully this can be facilitated by the State.

Hope for ‘law-abiding life’

“Tiso struggled with prison life at the start due to his lack of English and also because he was a convicted sex offender.

“He’s undertaken a number of sex management courses and the hope is that he will lead a law-abiding life once he has been released.”

Retired Garda Supt Joe Gannon — whose team led by former Det Sgt Mark Kavanagh brought the case against Tiso — told how his thoughts would be with Tiso’s victim.

Mr Gannon said: “When this individual is released it will be a difficult day for her.

‘Incredibly brave’

“I understand that she has tried to rebuild her life and has been incredibly brave over the last number of years. She suffered an appalling attack and I wish her all the best for the future.

“I also want to acknowledge the tremendous investigative work of the investigation team led by Mark Kavanagh in bringing this individual to justice.”

Following the incident, the woman had to wear a colostomy bag due to the injuries she sustained but this has now been removed.

The shocking incident caused global outrage and was covered in the US after the Irish Sun published CCTV footage of Tiso with the woman before the brutal attack.

CCTV footage

It showed him grappling with his victim. At one stage, she fell before he casually picked her back up.

CCTV also showed him returning to a club as his victim lay unconscious just yards away. She was found by two passers-by, who were said to have saved her life.

Tiso was identified as a suspect within two days. He was planning to flee Ireland and had a flight booked to Krakow in Poland.

In her victim impact statement, his victim said: “Sometimes I feel like I’m in a nightmare that I am unable to wake up from.

Wish to ‘delete that day’

“I would like to delete that day of my life and never have to remember that night.

“I was the vulnerable girl, the girl I read stuff about in the newspaper many times or that I watch on the television. I never imagined that one day this could be me.

“The girl that went out to have some fun nearly died.”

Judge Isobel Kennedy told Dublin’s Central Criminal Court: “The victim was discarded in a shocking condition and has suffered appalling damage.”
