Fifth Clean Transition Dialogue to emphasise key role of energy infrastructure in the green transition

On Monday (26 February), the Commission will continue its engagement with industry on the implementation of the European Green Deal. Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič will chair the fifth Clean Transition Dialogue, focusing on the development and deployment of well-interconnected, scaled-up and smart energy infrastructure. An efficient energy infrastructure network is key to enhance the competitiveness of Europe’s industry and clean technologies sector throughout the green transition.

The dialogue will involve high-level participants from across the energy infrastructure sector, including operators of both transmission and distributions networks, representatives of the energy storage, batteries and hydrogen segments, renewable equipment manufacturers and power generators. Digital and flexibility solutions, charging stations and carbon capture, storage and utilisation sectors will also be present. Representatives from the Agency of Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER), the Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Standardisation Bodies (CEN/CENELEC) and social partners have also been invited to participate.

The Commission will exchange with the participants on how to accelerate the development of an energy infrastructure system that is efficient, smart, and better interlinked. This will be essential to reach our ambitious renewable energy targets, speed up the electrification of the EU’s economy and allow for the decarbonisation of European industry. The EU is supporting Trans-European energy networks through the 2022 revised TEN-E regulation which promotes the integration of renewables and new clean energy technologies into the energy system, as well as simplifying and accelerating permitting and authorisation procedures. The Grids Action plan, published in November 2023, furthers this by presenting actions to ensure cross-border and local European electricity grids are rolled out further, faster and in a more efficient manner.

The Clean Transition Dialogues are a flagship initiative launched by President von der Leyen in the 2023 State of the Union address. They enable the Commission to engage in important exchanges with industry to strengthen and support the implementation of the European Green Deal. Additional dialogues will take place in the course of March.

It will be possible to follow the Clean Transition Dialogue on Europe by Satellite as from 11.30 (CET) on Monday 26 February.
