Fine Gael candidate quits race after admitting to taking money from developer

A Fine Gael local election candidate has withdrawn from next week’s elections following revelations she was paid money by a developer to withdraw a planning objection.

The Ditch website on Monday published a story which claimed that first-time candidate in Louth Marian Agrios was paid €15,000 by a developer who also carried out €15,000 worth of work at her home to withdraw a planning objection to the building of new homes.

The report outlines that when the plan was approved by the local council, Ms Agrios and her husband had indicated they would appeal to An Bord Pleanála, delaying the development.

However, a deal was reached to pay €15,000 and carry out €15,000 worth of work to a back garden patio.

In a post to social media, Ms Agrios said while her name will be on the ballot, she is asking not to be considered by voters.

“Following a report published online yesterday, I wish to announce I will not be contesting the 2024 Local Elections. What occurred was wrong and I am extremely sorry for it. It should not have happened.

“While my name remains on the ballot paper, I now ask that voters do not consider me for election. Once again, I apologise for what happened. It should not have occurred. I will not be making any further comment on this issue.”

Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien has previously indicated that he is seeking to introduce new rules to reduce bogus planning objections.
