First look at ‘Large scale’ Galway housing estate submitted for expanding town

An application to build a brand new housing estate has been submitted to Galway County Council for approval.

The large-scale residential development is being planned by Marshall Yards Development Company Ltd who want to construct it in Cartron, Oranmore.

The site measures 5.5 hectares in size and is located to the east of Oranmore. This area of land is included in the Galway development plan which requires the provision of a residential development on this site.

The proposed development would include 171 residential units which would comprise a mix of 16 one-bed maisonette units, four two-bed duplex apartment units, 127 two and three-bed townhouse units and 24 three and four-bed semi-detached units.

Several amenities are also included in the plan. These include a single-storey creche plus new pedestrian/cyclist facilities along the R338 public road connecting to Oranmore rail station.

Meanwhile, a French company looks set to pay out over €20 million for a major building in the heart of Galway city.

Citypoint in Galway went on the market earlier this month at a guide price of €21.5 million and is understood to have been sold close to this number to a French investment fund.

Vendors Aviva acquired the property when taking over Friends First in Ireland, who bought it in 2018 for around €22m and at the time it generated an annual €1.5m rent roll.

TK Maxx occupies 3,716sq m (40,000sq ft) of retail space, while the office accommodation of 1,951sq m (21,000sq ft) is home to the European headquarters of US tech company Mathworks, which has been in occupation since late 2016 and expanded into the remainder of the office space in 2022.
