First look at new Shannon-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter

Bristow Ireland have released a first look of the Irish Coastguard’s new AW189 in its official livery, photographed as it took to the Italian skies last weekend.

The AW189 was undergoing flight testing in Milan as members of Bristow Ireland carried out technical acceptance of the helicopter on-site at the aircraft manufacturer, Leonardo.

Lasrt year, Bristow was awarded an Air Operators Certificate (AOC) by the IAA – a significant step in the transition to the new contract.

It was awarded after the successful completion of a lengthy application and assessment process run by the IAA, and ensures the highest standards of professionalism and safety are met by the operator of the Coast Guard Aviation Service.

The transition to the new contract for the Irish Coast Guard begins in the fourth quarter of 2024.

In Ireland, as in many other countries, the AW189 SAR fleet will work as a system alongside fixed-wing aircraft, providing enhanced capability and interoperability, under the tasking authority of the Coast Guard.

In-country maintenance and support teams ensure that the aircraft and specialist crews stand at full readiness to respond from every base.
