‘Fits of laughter’ – Steve Coogan explains Mayo experience is behind west of Ireland farmer skit – news – Western People

British-Irish comedian Steve Coogan reminisced on a character from one of his Alan Partridge series during a recent BBC interview with Dermot O’Leary.

Coogan, whose mother grew up in County Mayo, introduced a fictional County Sligo farmer by the name of Martin Brennan to his popular ‘This Time with Alan Partridge’ series in 2019.

While chatting to Coogan, host O’Leary, who also has Irish roots, said that his father was in “fits of laughter” after watching the clip.

“I spent my summers in the west of Ireland and in Mayo,” Coogan explained to the host.

“I had lots of uncles who were farmers so the character [Martin Brennan] was an amalgam of them.”

Coogan remarked that the only slack he gave his Mayo mother was that he made Brennan from Sligo rather than her native county. See the full Martin Brennan skit
