Former Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand retires

Ryan Bertrand — who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012 — has announced his retirement from football.

The left-back started on the left side of midfield in Chelsea’s Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich in 2012 — the club’s first triumph in the competition.

Bertrand also helped the west London club win the FA Cup in the 2011-12 season and the Europa League the following campaign.

The 34-year-old made 57 first-team appearances for Chelsea having spent time on loan at six clubs, including Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa. He joined Chelsea from Gillingham’s youth academy as a 16-year-old,

In 2014, Bertrand moved to Southampton — where he played 240 matches across seven seasons. He then joined Leicester City on a two-year contract in 2021 but made just 11 appearances for the club, before leaving last summer.

Bertrand — who was capped 19 times at senior international level for England — had been without a club since leaving Leicester and announced his retirement from playing on Tuesday.
