Former Limerick student dies in motorbike accident in Canada

A FORMER University of Limerick student has died in a motorbike accident in Canada. 

Anthony McGwynne from Loughanelton, Calry in Sligo, graduated from the Law Plus Bachelor degree programme in 2019. 

The 27-year-old died when the motorbike he was on, was struck by a car on Arbutus Street in Vancouver on Thursday of last week, July 4. 

The collision happened just before 9.30pm and despite life-saving efforts by bystanders and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital for treatment.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland is providing consular assistance to Mr McGwynne’s family.

Provost and deputy president of University of Limerick, Shane Kilcommons paid tribute on rip.ie saying: “On behalf of University of Limerick, I would like to express my sincere condolences on the sudden passing of Anthony. The thoughts and prayers of the University community are with the McGwynne family, his partner Antonella and his many friends at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.”

Anthony is survived by his father Tony, mother Bernadette, brothers James and Matthew, sister Maeve and partner Antonella. 

In tributes, Anthony has been described as an “absolute gentleman” with infectious laughter” and someone who was funny, caring and adventurous. 

Past and current members of UL Kayak Club also paid their condolences to Anthony’s family, partner and friends.

Funeral arrangements for Anthony will be announced at a later date.
