A look at the matchups

(No. 3) Carlos Alcaraz vs. (No. 2) Jannik Sinner

A classic showdown between two of the top three tennis players in the world. They are also the only two major champions left in the tournament and have each only lost a single set in five matches to this point.

Alcaraz has just one win on the year, claiming the crown at Indian Wells. He defeated Sinner in those semifinals 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Alcaraz also touts two Grand Slam championships to his name but has never made it past the semifinals in Paris.

It’s been mostly smooth sailing for the Spaniard. He defeated Jeff Wolf in three sets and outlasted Jesper De Jong in four sets. He blew through his following foes (Sebastian Korta, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Stefanos Tsitsipas) in straight sets.

Alcaraz is 24-6 overall at the French Open. He brings in a potent 134-34 (79.8%) record on clay.

Sinner has been on a tear and is seeking his second consecutive Grand Slam championship. After reaching three straight singles titles in 2024, this is the deepest he has delved in France, coming as close as the quarterfinals in 2020.

The Italian opened up this rendition with three consecutive straight set wins over Christopher Eubanks, Richard Gasquet and Pavel Kotov. He took down Corentin Moutet in the fourth round.

He is 85-37 (69.7%) all-time on clay. Only one of Sinner’s 13 titles have come on such a terrain.

They split the head-to-head 1-1 with Sinner winning at Wimbledon in 2022 while Alcaraz emerged victorious at the 2022 U.S. Open.

(No. 7) Casper Ruud vs. (No. 4) Alexander Zverev

One player without a Grand Slam title will reach the championship match.

Zverev has reached the semifinal stage in Paris four straight years but fell flat each time. He touts two wins this season, tallying victories at Australia’s United Cup and Rome. He also brings an 11-match winning streak into today’s matchup.

He battled through a 6-4, 7-6, 6-4 victory over Alex De Minaur in the quarterfinals. Zverev is 33-9 this year, including a 15-3 record on clay. The German is 180-76 (70.3%) on clay for his career.

Ruud, a clay court specialist, is again knocking on the door of the French Open title after finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic the past two years. Before Ruud breezed past Djokovic with a walkover, he had to battle through some challenging obstacles, including a five-set thriller over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round.

Ruud is 39-9 this season, including a 21-4 record on clay.

Ruud and Zverev split their all-time head-to-head 2-2. Ruud defeated Zverev in their previous meeting in last year’s French Open semifinals 6-3, 6-4, 6-0.

It’s the first time in 20 years the semifinals do not feature Roger Federer, Djokovic or Nadal.
