A Cavan senior footballer has been remanded on bail after appearing in court charged with assaulting a man in Mullingar.

Oisin Kiernan (25), Rockross, Cavan, came before a sitting of Mullingar District Court this on Thursday afternoon charged with assaulting the man at Oliver Plunkett Street, Mullingar, Westmeath on August 8, 2023.

He was also charged with being intoxicated in a public place and of using threatening and abusive behaviour on the same date.

The accused, who is expected to line out for the Breffni county against Roscommon in the All-Ireland group stage this weekend, initially appeared in court last September.

On that occasion, Kiernan was charged with public order before reappearing in April where a section 3 assault charge was also issued.

In defence, solicitor Louis Kiernan said he had expected the alleged victim to be in court and intimated to the court for an adjournment.

Sgt Orla Keenan, for the State backed up those calls as Judge Owens revealed that the court had yet to decide on jurisdiction as to whether the case can be heard in the District Court or sent to the Circuit Court which has wider sentencing powers.

Kiernan was consequently remanded on bail to a sitting of Mullingar District Court on July 4.
