GAA team news: James McCarthy named on Dublin bench to face old foes Mayo
McCarthy, who missed almost all of the League with a hamstring injury, picked up a subsequent knock in Dublin’s Leinster final win over Louth.
Speaking after Dublin’s last win over Cavan, Dessie Farrell predicted neither McCarthy nor Lee Gannon would be fit to play any part against Mayo but the team’s captain is listed among their substitutes, alongside Jack McCaffrey and Colm Basquel.
Gannon remains absent.
McCarthy’s inclusion means it will, should be play, be a 12th championship meeting against Mayo. There are five other survivors from his first, the 2012 All-Ireland semi-final; Stephen Cluxton, Mick Fitzsimons, Ciarán Kilkenny, Cillian O’Connor and Aidan O’Shea.
Both O’Connor and O’Shea have been named in the Mayo lineup, which features a recall for Tommy Conroy in an indirect swap for Pádraig O’Hora.
Galway, meanwhile, have been handed a major boost by the return of Seán Kelly and Rob Finnerty. The two missed Galway’s recent victory over Westmeath, but come straight back into the starting team in place of Cian Hernon and Johnny Heaney.
Damien Comer is not part of the match day panel.
