Galway music world rocked as local giant loses brave fight with tributes flowing
A Galway music legend and accomplished director has lost his brave fight with a horrible illness with tributes pouring in for a giant of the city’s vibrant cultural scene.
Galway City Jazz Orchestra shared a heartfelt tribute to their musical director Martin Murray after he lost his battle with pancreatic cancer this week.
Martin and his orchestra had been in the midst of a hugely successful fundraiser centred around an amazing night of music at the end of May. Martin and his orchestra raised over €3,000 in an iDonate campaign, which is still open, and another €13,000 in ticket sales for Cancer Care West.

A photo of a beaming Martin Murray holding the cheque for over €13,000 was shared by Galway City Jazz Orchestra as a testament to his strength and dignity.
Galway City Jazz Orchestra shared the image and urged those who want to celebrate Martin’s life, or help Cancer Care West in their noble mission, to donate for Martin: “With great sadness we announce that our Musical Director Mr. Martin Murray has passed away following a long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
“Martin is pictured on 3rd June 2024 at the Cancer Care West Centre, Galway, holding a donation cheque – proceedings from the fundraiser ‘A Tribute to the Greats’ on 26/5/2024’. “
Martin Murray was a musical genius who commanded the 17-piece to new heights. He was highly accomplished as a director, having previously directed entertainment on one of the biggest cruise ships in the world.
