Galway store owner announces retirement ‘with a heavy heart’ after five decades

A much-loved store owner in Galway has announced he will retire after more than 50 years of serving the local community.

Mike Mongan, owner of Trinity Furniture on the Galway Road revealed his retirement decision after 52 years of being self-employed and 35 years in the furniture business.




Throughout his three-plus decades in the business, he has been to all the major trade shows in Europe as well as emerging markets in Asia.

Mike has thanked all of the customers who have walked through his doors down through the years as well as his “wonderful family” who have supported him throughout his journey.

In a post on Facebook, Mike revealed the sad news: “With a heavy heart I am announcing my retirement from the business in the coming weeks. After 52 years Self-Employed and 35 years in the furniture business, I am handing the mantle on to the next generation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my customers over the years. The furniture business has been good to me and my family has taken me from Caherlistrane To China and all the major trade shows in Europe.

“Rubbing shoulders and haggling with the biggest wholesalers in furniture from China, Malaysia and Italy. They are just some of the countries the furniture business has brought us to with my wonderful family it would not have happened. Especially my wonderful wife Winnie Lord rest her.”
