Garda on trial over deception and corruption dramatically changes plea in court

A serving Garda on trial charged in connection with 89 offences of deception, corruption and money laundering has dramatically changed his plea on Day 3 of his trial at Trim Circuit Court.

Joseph Doyle, 39, of Kilcock, Co Kildare, asked through his defence counsel Kathleen Leader, SC, to be re-arraigned in front of the jury and presiding Judge John Martin.

He entered guilty pleas to 29 deception and corruption charges between 2018 and 2020 out of the 89 original charges.

He has admitted to deception and corruption where he made a number of PSV holders pay for free brake tests, and to pay for free Article 60 licences, while he was Acting PSV Inspector for Co Meath.

He has been remanded on continuing bail and is to be sentenced on July 4.
