Gardaí add car seized in drugs operation to fleet ahead of Donegal Rally

The Volkswagen Golf, seized during a drugs operation, has been added to the Garda Roads Policing Fleet.

A car seized by gardaí has become one of the newest additions to the Garda Roads Policing Fleet and will now be used for road safety education.

The Volkswagen Golf was seized during an operation that also uncovered a large volume of drugs and unexplained cash.

The move comes as part of the launch of Operation NEXUS, a project by An Garda Síochána aimed at improving engagement between gardaí and car enthusiasts, promoting road safety and reducing road deaths.

A launch for the project took place in Letterkenny on Thursday evening following the ceremonial start of the Donegal Rally, where senior gardaí held a briefing alongside drivers, members of Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motor Club, and teams taking part in the Donegal Rally.

With a view towards highlighting road safety, gardaí are now making efforts to engage with car enthusiasts, particularly young male drivers. A call has been put out for suggestions on what modifications should be made to the new patrol car “within legal limits”.

“For safety reasons, there are regulations about what level of modifications can be made to cars beyond factory specifications,” a garda spokesperson said.

Information on the modifications made to the car will be provided by gardaí on the Operation NEXUS website, including the legal considerations made during the process.
