Gardai launch investigation after Dublin home allegedly petrol bombed

Gardai are investigating an arson attack on a house in central Dublin – days after two men living there were stabbed.

Sources have told The Irish Mirror that two men in the house, in the Sheriff Street area of Dublin 1, had been stabbed at the Punchestown music festival in Co Meath late last week. Neither man was seriously injured.

The men were recuperating from the incident when a mob attacked the house they live in on Wednesday evening.

It’s understood at least one petrol bomb was thrown at the house in the attack. Nobody was injured but gardai are investigating.

Footage of the horror attack taken from the top floor window of a nearby house was widely circulated across social media showing a group of men, some on bikes with their faces covered outside the property.

In a separate video of what appears to be the aftermath of the suspected petrol bomb attack, members of the fire service as well as neighbours and other passers-by can be seen gathered outside the property as smoke billowed from the bottom floor and alarms blared.

Sources say officers suspect a gang of street criminals from the southside of the city may have targeted the house. Officers are trying to establish a motive for the attack.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí were alerted to a fire at a property in Dublin 1 on Wednesday evening, 5th May 2024 at approximately 10.15pm.

“The scene was preserved and a technical examination has been conducted. Investigations are ongoing.”
