Gardaí to quiz man over gang murders of Richie Carberry and Hamid Sanambar after Spain orders extradition
The man, in his 30s, is wanted over the shooting of Sanambar and appeared in court in Spain in recent days.
He is expected to be arrested here and questioned over the murder of Carberry — gunned down in 2019 outside his home in Co Meath — following his extradition.
Detectives believe they have evidence to connect the man to the gang boss’s murder after he left a personal item in the getaway car.
Carberry’s killing was ordered by the north Dublin criminal known as Mr Big. He and Carberry were rivals from the same part of north Dublin. Mr Big was motivated to become involved in a feud in Drogheda in order to have his rival shot dead.
The Irish fugitive was arrested last Tuesday over a minor and unrelated crime in the Calahonda area of the Costa del Sol. Local police then learnt he was the subject of a European arrest warrant issued in Ireland. They alerted authorities here and the man was detained.
According to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, he was brought to court on Wednesday and it was “not necessary for him to be transferred to Madrid to appear before the National Court because he gave his statement by video link”.
Sanambar (34), who also went by the name Mohammad Ali Khorram, was shot dead outside the home of Sean Little on Kilbarron Avenue, Coolock, on May 28, 2019.
He had called to pay his respects to the family of 22-year-old Little, who had been found shot dead next to a burnt-out vehicle in Walshestown, near Balbriggan, seven days earlier.
Little and Sanambar are believed to have been killed as part of a feud between criminal gangs in the Coolock area. Sanambar was shot after Little’s associates blamed him for double-crossing his friend.
Gardaí believe Sanambar had also been involved in other feud attacks involving firearms.
He arrived in Ireland as an asylum-seeker before being granted permission to remain and had lived in several places including Longford, Cork and Priorswood in Dublin.
Sanambar received a three-year suspended sentence in 2015 for his role in a violent robbery by several men of two women working in a brothel in Cork in 2012.
Little’s murder came at the height of the Coolock feud involving the mob boss known as Mr Flashy.
The dead man’s associates blamed Kinahan cartel-linked gunman Caolan Smyth for his murder. The following day, his friend Jordan Davis (22) was shot in the head by a gunman as he pushed his baby son in a pram near his home in Darndale, north Dublin.
