Gerry Hutch ‘not concerned’ over threat to life as he jets to Dublin for funeral
GERRY Hutch flew into Dublin to attend the funeral of an old friend who died in a tragic accident, The Irish Sun can reveal.
The Monk, 61, returned last weekend after being told the threat on his life is “not as severe as it once was”.
He was spotted among mourners at a service for Christy Rock, the father of former Irish champion boxer Jim Rock, at the weekend.
Dad-of-13 Christy is understood to have been hit by a train at Louisa Bridge in Leixlip, Co Kildare, and subsequently passed away.
Rail services between Clonsilla and Maynooth were suspended for the night following the tragic accident on July 1.
Christy lived in Blanchardstown, Dublin, but was originally from Ballybough in the north inner city, close to where the Hutch family were from.
The Monk has been dividing his time between Dublin and Lanzarote since he was cleared of the Regency Hotel murder of Kinahan thug David Byrne last year.
It’s understood Gerry has known Christy since he was young and attended his funeral mass in St Brigid’s Church in Blanchardstown at the weekend.
He then joined family members for several hours in a nearby pub.
One source said: “He was there to pay his respects because he has known the family for many years.
“It’s clear he’s not too concerned about any threat to his life because he shook hands and greeted people very openly.
“The feud is long over and he has been told that the threat against his life is not as severe was it once was.
“It’s clear he was recently abroad because he was very tanned, but Gerry has never forgotten where he was from or the people he grew up with and is the first person to show his respect in such a situation.”
Since he was cleared in April 2023 of the 2016 assassination of Byrne at a boxing weigh-in, Gerry has been photographed enjoying drinks in Lanzarote, where it’s understood he owns property.
He has also been seen in Ireland. Earlier this year he attended an exhibit by court artist Mike O’Donnell in Listowel, Co Kerry.
He sketched Hutch during his trial at the Special Criminal Court.
A number of drawings of the crime chief were put on display at the event.
Last month, The Irish Sun revealed how he had given the green light to one of the drawings being raffled to raise money for two-year-old Axel Horgan, a toddler from Kerry who was born with a very rare genetic bone condition.
Hutch has also been spotted in his local Clontarf, Dublin, at various times since his acquittal last year.
His trial between October 2022 and January 2023 was one of the most high-profile in Irish history.
He was accused of being part of the armed hit team who launched an audacious raid at the Regency Hotel in February, 2016, in an attempt to murder cartel boss Daniel Kinahan.
The mobster escaped but the gunmen instead shot his key associate Byrne.
Supergrass Jonathan Dowdall claimed The Monk admitted his role in the murder to him.
But the three SCC judges dismissed these claims and acquitted Hutch.
