Glenveagh move on the marquee site for grand stand homes

It is understood Glenveagh is in ongoing discussions with the Land Development Agency to expedite apartments on the Cork site, and is also on the just announced LDA’s panel of 15 housebuilders. This site has been earmarked for high-density, high-rise development since the mid-2000s. It was first acquired by Howard Holdings for €35m from Ford, who used it as a motor distribution site.

Howard Holdings christened its scheme Atlantic Quarter, to comprise three towers, of 10, 20 and 30 storeys, but that ambition came to naught when the tide ran out on the Irish banking and construction sector shortly after planning was sought.

Glenveagh acquired the site from Nama for a reported €15m in 2018, a decade after it came into Nama’s hands in 2008. It has hosted the majority of the Live at the Marquee summer series of gigs since.

Decontamination and site clearance work has been ongoing at this site since earlier this year, with the full scale and scope of its five hectares or so now apparent to passers-by on the Marina and attendees of the 2024 Live at the Marquee on a replacement site, previously owned by Tedcastle. That temporary site is also due for future redevelopment, with Cork’s docks earmarked for up to 20,000 units over time.

Asked about progress at the old Ford/Howard/Glenveagh site, a spokesperson said comments reported in April from Glenveagh CEO Stephen Garvey still pertained that the likelihood was that they would be working with a State agency on that development and it will be a mixture of affordable purchase, cost rental, and elements of social units as well.
