Goldin: Patrick Mahomes’ ‘Most Iconic NFL Rookie Card Ever Produced’ Sells for 3K

A rare, high-grade rookie card of Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes sold for nearly $200,000 last week.

The 2017 Panini National Treasures card features Mahomes’ autograph and a jersey patch, and it is numbered to 10. Beckett gave the card a mint 9 grade and the autograph a 10, and it ultimately sold for $173,240 when taking Goldin’s buyer’s premium into account.

As part of the auction description, Goldin referred to the Mahomes National Treasures patch/auto rookie as “quite simply the most iconic NFL rookie card ever produced by Panini.”

While the card went for a pretty penny, it doesn’t come close to the most-expensive football card ever sold, which is also a Mahomes rookie.

In 2021, LJ’s Card Shop in New Albany, Ohio, purchased a 2017 Panini National Treasures Mahomes rookie card for $4.3 million. While that card is largely the same as the one that sold for $173,240 last week, it has a unique NFL patch and is numbered “one of one,” making it a one-of-a-kind collectible.

Despite being only 28 years of age and just seven seasons into his NFL career, Mahomes has already cemented himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

The 2017 No. 10 overall draft pick out of Texas Tech is a six-time Pro Bowler, two-time First Team All-Pro, two-time NFL MVP, three-time Super Bowl champion and three-time Super Bowl MVP.

With Mahomes under center, the Chiefs have won each of the past two Super Bowls, making them the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

While Mahomes has a ways to go before matching legendary Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady’s records of seven Super Bowl wins and five Super Bowl MVP awards, Mahomes has plenty of good football ahead of him.

Although a $173,240 investment in a single card is significant, Mahomes’ place in the annals of NFL history is already secured, and the value will likely only climb as he adds more accolades to his résumé.
