Gordon’s ‘best friend in football’ is Liverpool midfielder with link-up possible
Liverpool have held talks with Newcastle over a move for Anthony Gordon and the attacker may be able to link up with one of his best friends in the game if he does join the Reds
Anthony Gordon named Curtis Jones as one of his best friends in football as Liverpool eye a move for the Newcastle star.
Gordon has only been with the Magpies for 18 months but Newcastle’s compliance with the Premier League‘s Profitability and Sustainability Rules is causing concern. According to PSR, top-flight sides are allowed a maximum loss of £105million over a rolling three-year period.
There is some concern on Tyneside that they will have to make sales to avoid breaching that limit. Breaching the limit would lead to penalties, with both Everton and Nottingham Forest deducted points last season after breaching the £105m figure.
If sales are needed, Newcastle will have to make them before 30 June, when football’s financial year ends. Their top players will be the ones who come in for the highest amount of interest.
Gordon fits into that bracket, having recently won the club’s Player of the Year award. Liverpool have been touted as a possible destination and it is a place Gordon may be happy to head to, despite previously playing for Everton.
That is because he has a close relationship with Jones, who became a regular for the Reds last term. That was revealed on a recent episode of The Overlap when Gordon was asked to name his best friends in football.
“I’d say I’ve got three,” he told host and Manchester United legend Gary Neville. “Curtis Jones, Tommy Doyle, Elliot Anderson. Mixed bag there. Some club, some international.”

Gordon and Jones played alongside each other at the Under-21s Euros last summer, with the duo helping England win the tournament. Jones was also included in the Three Lions’ extended training squad for this summer’s Euros, before being cut ahead of the team heading to Germany.
While Gordon is away, Liverpool and Newcastle are understood to have held talks over a deal for the attacker. According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies have ‘explored’ the possibility of offloading a key asset such as Gordon.
Mirror Football understands they approached the Reds over a potential deal for the 23-year-old. But talks broke down when it was suggested that Jarell Quansah could move in the opposite direction.
While Liverpool remain admirers of Gordon, they are are not willing to let Quansah go the other way. The young defender enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last year and he will not be used as leverage in any swap deal.
It is claimed that Liverpool ultimately declined to make an offer for Gordon, though PSG are also admirers. The attacker is aware that talks over his future have taken place, though he is happy with life at St James’ Park.
