Gov will give you €70k to buy and do up this derelict cottage in North Cork
This tiny derelict country cottage in North Cork is up for auction – and with a rake of grants to do up vacant properties, you’ll pretty much be paid to take it.
The little property is at Knocknageeha West, a few kilometres from the small village of Boherbue and about 30km from Killarney. It’s been empty for decades, gutted on the inside, and in dire need of renovation.
The mid-terrace cottage is guiding at around €22,000 through auction. And while it will need some serious work, the building will qualify for the government’s derelict home grant, meaning the buyers will get a handy cash boost to do it up – potentially more than the property selling price.

Under the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, owners or buyers of derelict properties can get up to €70,000 to refurbish it to a livable standard, which selling agents Killian Lynch Auctioneers say makes it an “attractive proposition” for bidders.
The derelict cottage is between two two-storey houses, so will likely be a great fit for generous planning permission to transform it into a lovely little home. The cottage goes up for auction online here at 3pm on July 4th.
Meanwhile, the Government announced last month that the Local Authority Purchase and Renovation Loan will soon be available to help first-time buyers purchase and renovate derelict and non-habitable homes.
There are an estimated 17,000 derelict homes across Co Cork. The loan will help buyers cover the costs of purchasing empty properties and the renovation. In Cork, borrowers will be able to get a loan to do up a vacant property with an end-of-works value of up to €330,000.
