Government warns Thais to beware of dubious betting ads during Euro Cup; many online scams have been detected

BANGKOK (The Nation Thailand/ANN): The government has urged the public not to believe online sports betting sites that promise high returns, as they aim to lure people into betting on Euro 2024 football matches.

The government also advised parents to monitor their children and suggested that the people watch the games for enjoyment and support their favorite teams, rather than hoping to get rich through gambling.

Karom Polpornklang, deputy spokesperson at the Office of the Prime Minister, said that the government was concerned about citizens falling prey to various types of crimes. A large number of people have lost their assets due to gambling.

The government wants parents to watch over their children’s behaviour to ensure they do not get involved in football gambling. People should watch the matches for fun and support their favorite teams without expecting to get rich from gambling, as it could lead to financial loss and potentially ruin their future, Karom said.

“The government warns citizens not to believe in football betting websites that use deceptive advertising through online media, promising high returns to lure people, resulting in the loss of money and assets.

If you witness illegal activities or have any tip-offs related to online gambling, you can report them to the 191 emergency hotline or the National Police Headquarters hotline at 1599, available 24 hours a day,” Karom said.

Players, promoters, and organisers of football gambling would be subject to penalty under the Gambling Act, which includes imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to 2,000 baht, or both,” he warned. – The Nation Thailand/ANN
