Grading Colorado men’s basketball’s offseason moves

Grade: A+

Obvious NBA talent making an individual decision to enter his name into the draft isn’t technically a move. However, the departure of KJ Simpson could pay dividends in Colorado’s future, so I’m offering a grade here.

Before last season, everyone knew forwards Cody Williams and Tristan da Silva were NBA-bound while Simpson’s chances were shaky. Following his junior year explosion, which should have earned him Pac-12 Player of the Year, Simpson was a certified NBA draft prospect. Still, his small frame and second-round draft projection gave CU fans hope that the 6-foot-2 point guard could return to Boulder for his senior year. While it would have been amazing to see one of the best all-around point guards in college basketball run it back, Simpson’s decision to take his talents to the NBA is ultimately for the best.

With da Silva and Williams moving on with no questions asked, surpassing last season’s success would be hard regardless of whether or not Boyle retained Simpson. Now that Simpson is headed to the Charlotte Hornets, Boyle has another name to add to his list of NBA-caliber guards he’s produced at Colorado. Place that alongside Simpson’s development and recruits will be hard-pressed to turn down CU. Plus, Simpson’s departure allows the Buffs’ inexperienced roster to develop together.
