Half of golf course remains closed due to damage from last week’s storm

LESAGE, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A week after severe weather left a mark on parts of our region, the cleanup effort is far from over.

Last Wednesday, the Riviera Country Club in Lesage was among the places that saw significant damage. Dozens of trees were brought down.

Dirk McFann, the owner of the club, says he’s never seen damage that extensive there.

“You kind of wanted to cry,” he said.

McFann says they brought in a contractor to remove the downed trees.

“There was no way for us to handle all this,” he said. “We don’t have the equipment. All we have are some chainsaws.”

The front 9 remain closed. They were final able to re-open half of the course, the back 9, on Tuesday.

Golfers like George White had to cancel their plans to play at the course during the holiday weekend. He’s grateful part of the course is back open as the cleanup continues.

“I’ve seen it flood,” White said. “I’ve seen the water up here, but never this kind of damage.”

“It’s going to affect the atmosphere,” McFann said. “That’s a fact.”

McFann says they’re hoping to be able to re-open the rest of the course this weekend.
