Harry Maguire at risk of missing Euros in huge England and Gareth Southgate blow
Harry Maguire could miss out on the final Euro 2024 squad as the England defender continues to nurse an injury and is training away from the main squad as he works towards full fitness
Harry Maguire could yet miss Euro 2024 as England sweat on the fitness of the centre-half.
The Manchester United defender was among three players who didn’t train with the main squad on Thursday as he underwent an individual programme in an effort to get back to full fitness. He has been struggling with a muscle injury, which ruled him out of the recent FA Cup final.
Gareth Southgate had hoped he’d recover sufficiently to be part of the squad that jets out to Germany. The Telegraph though reports that sources close to the squad believe Maguire could miss out on the Euros as he continues to struggle with his injury.
That would be a massive blow to the England boss, who has made Maguire central to his plans for much of his tenure. The United defender has been a regular at the three major tournaments under Southgate and brings a wealth of experience.
He, fellow centre-half Lewis Dunk and club team-mate Luke Shaw were all missing from the main group that trained. It would leave Southgate potentially having to shuffle his options at the heart of defence, bringing in some less experienced faces.
The extended 33-man squad needs to be cut to 26 come Friday night, as per the UEFA deadline. The group currently features Dunk, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Maguire, John Stones, Joe Gomez and Jarrad Branthwaite. Stones is a regular with the Three Lions but the others have limited international exposure.
Branthwaite for example only received his first cap on Monday when he was introduced as a sub during the 3-0 win over Bosnia. Konsa and Guehi only have 13 caps between them.
Maguire, even when he was being neglected at Old Trafford, always retained the faith of Southgate, who had no issues picking him, which proved divisive. The centre-half has often produced his best for the Three Lions and was part of the squad that made the Euros final three years ago.
The centre-half scored an own goal in a win over Scotland back in September which led to a passionate defence of the player from Southgate. He said: “He has been an absolute stalwart for us in the second most successful English team for decades, he has been an absolutely key part of that. I have talked about the importance of our senior players, he has been crucial amongst that and every time he goes on the field the resilience he shows, the balls he shows is absolutely incredible so he is a top player and we are all with him.”
