Heartbreaking tributes paid to camogie player, 18, after she dies ‘unexpectedly’

HEARTBREAKING tributes have poured in after a talented camogie player and athlete passed away “unexpectedly” in hospital earlier this week.

Sarah Kate O’Mara, 18, from Gurranbraher in Cork died in the Mater Hospital Dublin after becoming unwell on Monday.

The talented athlete played for Cork’s Glen Rovers camogie club and was a member of Carraig na bhFear AC athletics club.

The athletics club shared the devastating news on Facebook.

They said: “It is with great sadness that we must share the news of the passing of one of our junior members Sarah Kate O’Mara.

“Sarah was a talented athlete who was always full of life and laughter and it is hard to comprehend her loss.”

The club has suspended all activities due to Sarah Kate’s passing.

They revealed that Sarah Kate had numerous athletic achievements including All-Ireland Cross Country Bronze and Munster indoor silver medals.

They added: “Sarah Kate’s untimely death has left the entire cub and wider community devastated.”

Rockban camogie club also paid tribute to the athlete on Facebook.

They said: “We would like to send our our heartfelt condolences to the O’Meara family on the passing of their daughter Sarah Kate.

“Sarah Kate was a talented GAA player who played proudly with her club Glen Rovers and her county was fierce opponent at many mathes against Rockban.

“A sad and devastating time when a girl is taken far too soon, our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time. Forever 18 RIP.”

‘GONE FAR TOO SOON’

The youth organisation Hut Youth Project CDYS in Gurranabraher Cork expressed their condolences to Sarah Kates’ family.

They said: “Sarah Kate was a past member of The Hut Youth Project and was involved in our rap, beats & song writing group with Garry & Joe.

“Our condolences to all her family and friends, in particular her brother James who is a current member of our art group at The Hut with Megan & Suzie. Our thoughts are with you all.”

Sarah Kate’s funeral mass will take place Saturday morning at the Church of the Ascension in Gurranabraher Cork.

Her funeral notice reads that she died surrounded by her loving family by her side.

It reads: “Reposing at her home on Friday 21st June with visitation from 4.00pm with prayers at 8.00pm.

“Requiem Mass on Saturday 22nd June at 11.00am in the Church of the Ascension, Gurranbraher. Funeral afterwards to St. Catherine Cemetery, Kilcully.”
