History-making McCormack part of Irish squad for Paris

Fionnuala McCormack will become the first Irish woman to compete in five Olympic Games as the Irish athletics squad for the Paris Games was named today.

Team Ireland will be represented by 23 athletes at the Games, many buoyed by superb performances at the recent World Relay Championships and European Championships.

It means the officially selected number of athletes competing for Team Ireland has now reached a record high of 122, surpassing the team of 116 that competed in Tokyo.

Marathon runner McCormack will make her own bit of history when she competes on the roads of Paris on 11 August in what will be her fifth Games.

400m runner and relay racer Sharlene Mawdsley will be among those competing in her first Olympics.

The track and field events take place in the Stade de France, which transforms from the Rugby Sevens events earlier in the Games to a bespoke athletics stadium, with a purple track.

The Olympic Games in Paris will run from 24 July – 11 August, with the opening ceremony taking place on 26 July.
