Holger Rune calls out ‘super strange’ Boris Becker after Wimbledon comment
Holger Rune was left frustrated with Boris Becker after the German publicly questioned his coaching partnership with Patrick Mouratoglou. Rune is currently preparing for Wimbledon after reaching the quarter-finals last year and will face Soonwoo Kwon in his first match on Tuesday.
The Dane recently teamed up with Mouratoglou for another spell together, having worked alongside him on a handful of previous occasions. Rune has also been working with performance analyst Mike Jones and physio Louis Fresneau, who are part of the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy.
Becker, who briefly coached Rune before stepping down earlier this year, was quick to question his partnership with Mouratoglou after the Frenchman was not spotted at one of his practice sessions ahead of Wimbledon.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Becker tagged Rune and Mouratoglou in a post which read: “Quick question: I see @pmouratoglou in London but NOT with @holgerrune2003 at Wimbledon…they are still working together?!?”
Rune, however, was not a fan of Becker’s public questioning and fired back at the 56-year-old’s ‘super strange’ antics. He asked why Becker had not messaged him privately, considering they still text each other about certain things, before making it clear that he is still working with Mouratoglou.
“Super strange you don’t ask me this question directly as we text together about other stuff,” wrote Rune. “The answer to your question is yes, we work together. Sharing the tournaments between us as planned.”
Becker split with Rune in February due to his inability to spend enough time working with the 21-year-old. He was unable to travel to the Australian Open due to his criminal conviction in the UK, which sees him banned from entering certain countries.
Shortly after their split was confirmed, Rune admitted that it had been difficult to find ‘the perfect match’ to replace long-time coach Lars Christensen.
“After working with the same coach for 15 years, my entire tennis life, it is not easy to find the perfect match on the first try,” said Rune.
“I have learned a lot and found out what is important for me to feel good and at the same time develop as I want. I have big ambitions and big goals and I need people around me who have the same vision and people I can trust to achieve my goals.
“I need people who know me, who can be there all the time. It gives me security and joy in a world with changing environments and conditions every week.”
