Hurling QFs Saturday, Tailteann semis keep Sunday slot

The Tailteann Cup semi-finals will be held on Sunday next with the All-Ireland hurling quarter-finals remaining on Saturday.

Both sets of fixtures were initially set to be played on those dates but calls were made for the days to be flipped.

At a Central Council meeting on Sunday evening it was anticipated that the hurling quarter-finals would be switched to Sunday and it is understood that a majority of delegates voted in favour of such a switch at the specially convened gathering meeting this evening.

However, a 60% majority was needed for those dates to be flipped and it is understood that the final vote fell just short of that.

The meeting heard strong representations from Wexford, who are due to host the All-Ireland Féile na nGael national hurling series next Saturday and had asked for the hurling quarter-finals to move to the Sunday,

However, the dates and games will now remain as per the master fixture plan.

Ahead of their Tailteann Cup semi-final, Sligo had vigorously voiced their opposition to any proposed switch.

In the hurling, Wexford meet Munster finalists Clare and Dublin face Cork. In the Tailteann Cup, Sligo will play Down and Antrim are up against Laois.
