‘I overdosed twice in the same day on prescription drugs’ – Tony Kelly on addiction, relapse and the treatment that saved him
Actor, writer, director and comedian Tony Kelly from Waterford became addicted to prescription medication in 2008. Now three and a half years sober, he says he owes everything in his life to the addiction treatment he received
‘I took Valium for the first time at the end of 2008. A relationship I was in ended abruptly and I took it very hard mentally. My mother gave me a Valium to sleep that night because I was in a state of panic. How it made me feel I can’t even describe. It was just the answer to everything I was missing. She gave me another one a day or so later and, that night, I snuck downstairs and took a second one.
A couple of weeks later I went to the doctor and was put on antidepressants and Xanax, which I started abusing almost immediately. It’s funny, I was so anti-drugs when I was a teenager. I remember I ended friendships with people because they started smoking hash. I was always into drinking but I didn’t see Xanax and Valium as drugs because you could get them from a doctor.
