Author Barbara Williams had a complicated and fraught relationship with her grandmother, Mary Sullivan. And that is evident in the provocative title of her memoir about her maternal granny: I Hate You, Mary Sullivan.

As the title suggests, Sullivan was not a warm and doting grandparent with treats and sweets for every occasion. She was stern and could be highly critical.
