‘Iconic’ Galway area set for complete ‘rejuvenation’ as plans announced
An iconic area of Galway will be completely transformed after plans were announced that would rejuvenate the area.
Lombard Street will undergo significant redevelopment that will see a number of changes to how it currently looks.
In an artistic design of the plans, the Saturday market will be expanded into Mainguard Street as well as an overall more pedestrian-friendly layout with more plants and wider footpaths.

This will allow for the cafes to potentially add outdoor seating. In a recent update, Councillor Eddie Hoare confirmed that a tender “for the appointment of an Architect Led Multidisciplinary design team for the project is being developed.”
Cllr Hoare said: “This is a project I have pushed for quite some time and delighted to confirm a tender for the appointment of an Architect Led Multidisciplinary design team for the project is being developed.”
“This artist’s impression shows the extension of the Saturday market into Mainguard Street and a more pedestrian-friendly environment (part of the Lombard Street Rejuvenation project). The view shows wider pavement which will allow cafes and restaurants to spill out onto the street.”
“This is an iconic area of Galway with both the Galway Market and St. Nicholas Church in close proximity. It is vital that a thorough stakeholder engagement happens. At present, there are no proper power outlets, poor water supply and no toilet facilities at the Galway Market. It’s important that this is fully incorporated into the plan.”
