In the final over with South Africa needing 16 runs, David Miller let loose and smashed the ball down long-off.

It was flying out for a six, but sprinting at full pace was Suryakumar, who managed to catch it just as it was about to sail over the boundary.

And as his momentum took him over the ropes, he had the presence of mind to throw the ball into the air to keep it in play before running back in and catching it again.

It sent the Indian fans in Barbados into a frenzy and has already been labelled one of the best catches of all time.

One fan said on X: “SURYAKUMAR YADAV YOU’RE PHENOMENAL.”

Another posted: “Suryakumar Yadav just won WC for India here, greatest ever catch in a situation like this.”

And a third added : “GREATEST CATCH EVER IN HISTORY. TAKE A BOW, SURYAKUMAR YADAV.”

This fan then posted: “Catch of the century… unbelievable Suryakumar under such pressure.”

India went on to win the T20 World Cup by seven runs, ending a 17-year drought for the trophy.

But no one can argue that they did not deserve it, winning every game they played – beating England en route to the final in the semi-final.

However, they did not have it all their own way and South Africa needed just 26 from 24 balls when Heinrich Klaasen and Miller were thumping it out of the ground.

India captain Rohit Sharma went on the attack and brought in Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya to slow the run rate down, doing an excellent job.

They managed to whittle down the Proteas and leave them needing 21 from 12 balls to turn the game on its head once more.

But it will be Suryakumar’s incredible catch that will be watched a million times over in India as their crowning moment, finally ending a lengthy wait for World Cup glory.
