During the Covid lockdowns, many couples had to defer or drastically downsize their nuptials — but big wedding parties are deeply embedded in Irish culture and could never truly go away

I recently discovered that what constitutes a ‘small wedding’ in Ireland and the UK is wildly different. While catching up with an acquaintance from London, we chatted about the various nuptials that had filled our calendars in the previous months.

She told me about a chic wedding in the south of France and I described a ‘small’ wedding I’d attended in December of last year. “Ooh, I adore a small wedding,” she cooed. “How many did they invite?”
