Iona Prep student dies in New Rochelle crash
Traffic-based fatalities are down in NY
Between 2019 and 2022, traffic fatalities increased 17% across the US.
An Iona Prep student died early Saturday in a fiery crash at the entrance to the Golden Horseshoe Shopping Center in New Rochelle.
The shopping center is on Wilmot Road on the city’s border with Scarsdale. New Rochelle police responded to a report of an accident at the shopping center, and when they arrived a 2019 Honda Accord was engulfed in flames. After firefighters extinguished the fire, the lone occupant was found dead in the driver’s seat, police said.
Police and school officials did not provide the victim’s name and age but a statement issued Saturday by the school indicated he had just completed his sophomore year.
“Iona Preparatory School was saddened to learn that a member of last year’s sophomore class was killed in a tragic car accident earlier this morning. We will be praying for his family and friends in the days ahead, and our School Counseling team is available to his classmates and all parents looking to talk with their children about such delicate matters.
